What is ORCID? How can I get an ORCID ID?

Answer

ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID.  An ORCID ID is a persistent digital identifier (not unlike a social security number) that is associated with a specific researcher involved in scholarly communication. These unique identifiers are meant to solve the issue of author ambiguity due to similar names, spelling variations, and individual database indexing. You can register for an ORCID ID at https://orcid.org/

Example - A database search for author Smith, R. can retrieve a list of names including:

Smith

Smith, R.

Smith, R. H.

Smith, R. W.

Smith, Rebecca

Smith, Robert

Smyth, Robert W.

Smythe, R.
